History

Founded in 1938 by Flora Mae Statler, the city was named ‘Surprise’ because she would ‘be surprised if the town ever amounted to much.’ The city has since proved her wrong with explosive growth.

Weather & Climate

Surprise’s desert climate features long, extremely hot summers and short, mild winters. The western location means slightly higher temperatures than the East Valley.
